APMT Operadores · Guide
What you learn in an excavator operator course
Short answer
What do you learn in an excavator operator course?
In APMT's Hydraulic excavator fundamentals program you learn, across six modules, the machine's components and systems, excavator-specific safety and blind spots, controls and work cycles on the simulator, supervised practice in the training yard, trenching, truck loading and grading, and you finish with a field assessment. It is Silver level, in-person in El Salvador and Nicaragua, and it awards the APMT competency certificate.

The six modules and what each one is for
Excavator components and systems
Recognize the machine's main systems before operating it.
Specific safety and blind spots
Identify the excavator's own risks: where nobody sees you and where you cannot see.
Simulator: controls and cycles
Practice the basic digging cycle with no risk and repeat it until it is clean.
Supervised yard practice
Operate the real machine under direct supervision in a closed yard.
Trenching, truck loading and grading
Do the three tasks most requested on site and self-assess your accuracy.
Field assessment
Show the assessor a safe and productive operation.
The module structure is APMT's proposal and is subject to academic review. It does not replace the equipment manufacturer's manuals.

APMT's excavator course: theory on safety and operation, simulator practice and field practice on the real machine.
What you will be able to do
- Operate the standard controls safely.
- Dig trenches, load and do basic grading.
- Apply practices that reduce fuel use and wear.
Excavator or mini excavator
They are two different programs. The mini excavator is taught for tight spaces and urban work, where the main risks are buried utilities (water, power, telecom) and people nearby. That program has five modules and aims for you to maneuver safely in tight spaces, recognize the risk of buried utilities and look after tracks, blade and attachments.

The certificate you receive
Both programs award the APMT competency certificate: it proves you performed the task in front of an authorized assessor, with stored evidence. Silver level means supervised operation, simulator and applied exercises, with an initial practical assessment. The certificate carries a code and a QR so a job site or a client can check it online.
People who already graduated in excavator operation at APMT's campus are listed with name, program and date on the Job-site stories page.
Hours, dates and price
Program hours are not published yet ("to be defined" on the program page); they are confirmed per intake, together with dates, seats and price. Request the information from the program page.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the excavator course?
APMT does not publish program hours yet: they are confirmed per intake. What is defined are its six modules, from theory to the field assessment.
Do you practice on a real excavator?
Yes. After the simulator comes supervised yard practice on the real machine and, at the end, a field assessment.
Which certificate do I get after the excavator course?
The APMT competency certificate, Silver level, with a code and QR verifiable online. It certifies you performed the task in front of an authorized assessor.
Does the excavator course qualify me for a mini excavator?
They are separate programs. The mini excavator has its own program, focused on tight spaces, urban work and buried utilities.
